What Is TLIF?
Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is a surgical procedure performed through a posterior (back) approach to remove a damaged disc, decompress the nerves, and stabilize the spine.
When Is It Considered?
TLIF may be considered in patients with:
- Lumbar spinal stenosis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Recurrent disc herniation
- Spinal instability
- Degenerative disc disease with associated nerve compression
What Does It Treat?
TLIF relieves pressure on spinal nerves and stabilizes the affected segment of the spine.
What to Expect
The procedure is performed through the back. The damaged disc is removed, the nerves are decompressed, and an interbody implant is placed to restore disc height. Screws and rods are used to stabilize the spine and allow fusion to occur over time. Patients are typically mobilized early after surgery, with a gradual return to normal activities over the following weeks.
